1. Introduction
The Made in China Journal is an initiative by Global China Lab APS, a non-profit organisation devoted to producing and disseminating open knowledge about contemporary China. This Privacy & Cookie Policy explains how Global China Lab APS processes personal data collected through the website https://www.madeinchinajournal.com, in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR). This policy covers both:- the processing of personal data provided by users when interacting with the website;
- the use of cookies and similar technologies.
2. Data Controller

3. Personal data processed through the website
a) Data provided voluntarily by users
When users contact the Association through the contact form or by email, the Association processes the personal data voluntarily provided (such as name, email address, and message content). Purpose: to respond to requests and manage related communications. Legal basis: Article 6(1)(b) GDPR (pre-contractual measures) or Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in responding to inquiries). Retention period: data are retained only for the time necessary to manage the request and any follow-up correspondence.b) Browsing data
During normal operation, the website collects certain technical information (such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited), which is necessary for the functioning and security of the website. These data are processed in aggregated form and are not used to identify users.c) Newsletter Subscription
Users may subscribe to the Association’s newsletter through the dedicated form available on the website. In this case, the Association processes the personal data voluntarily provided by the user (first name, last name, and email address) for the sole purpose of sending newsletters and updates related to the Association’s activities. Legal basis: Article 6(1)(a) GDPR (consent). Data processor: Mailchimp (The Rocket Science Group LLC), acting as a data processor on behalf of the Data Controller. As Mailchimp is a US-based provider, data may be transferred outside the EU; such transfers are governed by the EU Standard Contractual Clauses and/or the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. Retention period: data are processed until the user withdraws consent or unsubscribes from the newsletter. Users may withdraw their consent at any time by clicking the “unsubscribe” link included in each newsletter or by contacting the Association.d) Donations via PayPal (not active at the moment) Users who wish to make a donation are redirected to the PayPal platform. The Association does not collect or store any payment data (such as card numbers or bank details): all payment information is processed directly by PayPal (Europe) S.à r.l. et Cie, S.C.A. as an independent data controller, in accordance with its own privacy policy (available at https://www.paypal.com/privacy). The Association only receives confirmation of the donation and the information necessary for accounting and reporting obligations (such as the donor’s name and donation amount). Legal basis: Article 6(1)(c) GDPR (compliance with legal/accounting obligations) and Article 6(1)(f) GDPR (legitimate interest in managing donations).
4. Cookies
a) Essential cookies
The website uses technical cookies that are strictly necessary for the correct functioning of the site and for ensuring basic navigation and security features. These cookies do not require user consent.b) Analytics cookies
The website uses Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to collect aggregated statistical information about website usage (e.g. pages visited, duration of visits). Microsoft acts as a data processor and/or independent controller depending on the processing; data may be transferred outside the EU under the applicable safeguards (EU Standard Contractual Clauses / EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework). This website does not use:- profiling or marketing cookies;
- cookies for targeted advertising;

6. Data recipients
Personal data may be accessible to technical service providers (such as website hosting or email service providers) acting as data processors on behalf of the Data Controller. Data are not disclosed to the public. Some data processors (such as Mailchimp and Microsoft) are located outside the European Union; in these cases, transfers are carried out in accordance with the GDPR, on the basis of adequacy decisions, Standard Contractual Clauses, or the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.7.
