Judith Audin is a researcher at the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China (Hong Kong) and the chief editor of China Perspectives. Her research focuses on socio-political networks in Beijing’s neighbourhoods, the ethnography of the coal industry and social change in Datong (Shanxi), as well as abandoned places and contemporary ruins in China.

Through an ethnographic approach based on long-term observation and in-depth interviews conducted over several years, this essay examines how the restructuring of the local coal industry in the reform era has impacted the living and working conditions of the miners in the area.
